Coumarin is an aromatic lactone (IUPAC name: 2H-1-benzopyran-2-one) which exists in both free and glycoside forms and can be found in many plants such as those of the Apiaceae or Umbelliferae and Rutaceae families. It occurs naturally in essential oils including cinnamon, lavender, tonka, lemongrass, rose, tagetes, and tarragon. Sweet clover is one of the plants that contain coumarin in its pure form. Coumarin imparts strength and gives a characteristic note to perfumes.

Pharmaceutical

It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a precursor reagent in the synthesis of a number of synthetic anticoagulant pharmaceuticals.
